  • Kurt Schwitters
  • De Stijl
  • Peter Oud
  • Gerrit Rietveid
  • The Bauhaus
  • Moholy Nagy
  • Herbert Bayer
  • El Lissitzky
  • Tschichoid

In tonight's class we discussed modernism and the transition into sans-serif typefaces being the basis of modern design. The modern movement was led by the Bauhaus and their inspiration from expressionism and handicraft. The Bauhaus is also the model for most art schools in the 20th century. Type and image play a major roll in modern graphic design and the preliminary colors. Another strong influence was Jan Tschichold and him bringing 20th century graphic design expression into full realization. He also gave whitespce a new roll.

  • The Steinberg Brothers
  • De Stijl

El Lissizky was probably the most influental designer we have covered yet in this class. From establishing the grids in his work to the photomontage that he addapted from rodchenko. He embodied ideals not only as functions. Also Lissizky used architecture to help structure his designs being that this is what he studied in Darmstadt. Another powerful group was the Steinberg Brothers who brought in a fun characteristic to graphic design and also took a lot of influence from film and the use of a light source.

  • Salvador Dali - Rene Magritte
  • Surrealism

Tonights mostinteresting topics for me would have to be the surrealist movement and the work of salvador Dali. Dali revolutionaized the ability to market Art and for that he is one of the most influential people in the art world. Also Kurt Schwitters with his one man art movement is very impressive. He was able to reject one of the largest graphic design movements and he did it for a non political reason.

  • Art Nouveau
  • Koloman Moser
  • Total Design
  • Peter Behrens
  • Frank Pick

the most interesting aspect of tonights lecture would have to be the information on Thomas Nash with the invention of Santa Clause for a marketing tactic. This information has always pointed in a different direction and I found that the existence of holidays for a profitable situation is the basis of our society. Nash had a lot to do with everything in our society from politics to business and we still hold on to what he created today. Chromo lithography was also interesting wth how the main principles are similar to how we print now but much ore complicated.

Some important topics covered in the lecture tonight where;

  • The earliest form of writing was through the pictorals of the Cuneiform
  • The alphabet is the first start to a civilized culture
  • Uncial is the term for the Roman inch
  • Celtic book design is thought to be the hallmark of the illuminating manuscripts
  • Gutenburg was the first person to use a printing press
  • the first printed type was texture
  • woodblock printing came into play in the 14 hundreds
  • Printing launched modernism in to a new dimension
  • Many typefaces and styles popular today where envisioned hundreds of years ago
  • The arrival of printing lead to more scholarly materials
  • Rubication was a style of text in which a space was left for customization( Like your name on the back of an Ipod)
  • german text seemed to take on a much thicker appearance than Roman predecessor

The creation of simplistic drawings led to the invention of a written language. Our lives are sculpted by the information we covered today. Evolution of text and font families has created the world we live. Without Guttenburg and the printing press the idea of newspapers or magazines would not be possible. Needless to say our education would not be at the level it is and the technology that we have at our fingertips would not be possible either. In Graphic design typefaces are one of the most important elements if not the most important element. I found the concept of ype creating a modern world to be very intriguing. Type is something that is viewed by people all over the world everyday and the ideas of how those letters arrived doesn't get to much discussion. This information should be learned by everyone not just Graphic design students.
